Everybody’s Fine [2009]

This family drama is much tougher than you think, or what the poster would like you to think. It takes a rather light approach to a very difficult story of dysfunctional and estranged families. Frank Goode worked very hard his hole life, trying to raise his four children. Doing so, he got sick, and as his end nears he wanted to check on his kids, so he tried to get them all to come to him.  But, busy as they are they all could not make it, so he decides to visit them. Very interesting subject of a relationship between father and his children and decisions that made in childhood impact the later life. Very strict father pushed his children to make something of themselves, did he succeed you will find out if check out this flick. Enjoy.

Edge of Darkness [2010]

The return of the soldier. Mel Gibson stars in this thriller that has expectedly won over audiences all around the world. But is there any reason for that? I think not. This movie, except for a few jumpy scenes, is pretty much the usual stuff, and it has nothing new to offer. We have seen the similar approach in his 1999 flick Payback. Thomas Craven is homicide detective, estranged from his daughter he lives alone and concentrates on work. When his daughter visits him a series of events will make him a very angry man, relentless in his search for answers that will lead him much higher than he expected. There are several unexpected scenes that just jolt the viewer with their sheer intensity, and I loved, if they have taken that approach and applied it to the entire movie, this would be an instant classic. Still it is well worth watching. Enjoy…

Director: Martin Campbell

Cast: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Bojana Novakovic, Danny Huston, Jay O. Sanders

Agora [2009]

Movies that are with religious subject are very hard to make. Perfect example is The Passion of the Christ, shrouded in controversy. Agora also belongs to this category, presenting historical events and religious prosecution in all its grittiness. Hate, love, doubt, and blind belief present even today are portrayed in a masterful way, and you can see the movie several times, each time discovering something new. The story is set in Egypt, ruled by Rome, it is the center of the conflict between different religions. And as always the new religion tries to destroy everything that is related to the previous one, no matter what are the consequences. Lives, work, books and scientific conclusions of members of the opposite faith are to be destroyed, and forgotten, no matter how true they are. Beautifully shot, with great wide angles and intense sets this movie is perfect in almost any way. With its profound attitude it uses art to tell its story. I`m guessing that it will not be received well by general population, but I hope that the enlightened few will check it out. Enjoy…

Gabriel [2007]

I know that many of you will disagree with the rating of this movie, but I think it is fucking awesome. This is a perfect example of how lack of money pushes director and crew into innovative, original and above all visually stunning solutions. This movie is filled with them, using the noir vibe extensively and mixing it with great and highly involving story it proves that there are still talented people out there. You might compare this flick with the newer version Legion, but you will see that Gabriel still puts up a good fight visually and story-wise. The story is set in a dark city, filled with sin and debauchery. In this purgatory archangels and the fallen ones fight for the human souls. At the time of the Gabriels arrival the darkness has taken entire city. The rest of the archangels are scared and they have gone underground in fear for their lives. It is up to him to try to unite them, and destroy the darkness that have shrouded the city. Of course there are some lame scenes and aspects of the flick (like the overused eyes thing) but they all fade when you look at the big picture. Enjoy.

Opapatika [2007]

Opapatika is a very strange name for a movie and it will stick with you long after you have saw it. It has a decent production values so the special effects and the feel of the movie are good. Director is not afraid to show skulls split open and other gory stuff, making this squirting flick more interesting. You can see the similar approach in Tokio Gore Police, but with a lower budget. The whole story is very original and I liked, its bound to be redone in America. So as you will see in the beginning of the flick, there is another world, a very strange world where beasts, man, and Opapatike live together. Various souls who have died in many ways coexist peacefully, but that is about to change when one mans quest for immortal life jeopardizes the lives of the remaining Opapatike. Opapatike are like superheros, they have individual super powers that they use with a price they have to pay. The only problem with the flick is that the director got lost in the action and fighting sequences, losing the storyline in senseless slaughter. It`s still a good movie :D Enjoy…
