Layer Cake [2004]

I think that English crime flicks developed a cult following, especially after the work of Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch., RocknRolla), although the whole thing has much deeper roots(The Long Good Friday 1980). Layer Cake is also a English crime flick, and if you have seen at least one of these movies you know what to expect. An unknown cocaine dealer is very successful at his work. He is very careful about everything, planning  each and every action. But he will soon find himself knee deep in crap as everything starts to go to hell. Crazy Serbian assassins, drug deals gone wrong, colorful characters and much more created a very good blend of action and intense situations. Daniel Craig was a perfect pick for the role of an unknown dealer(we never learn his name) and the rest of the cast was good too. Enjoy…

Director: Matthew Vaughn

Cast: Daniel Craig, Tom Hardy, Colm Meaney, Tamer Hassan, George Harris, Brinley Green

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

The Soloist [2009]

The Soloist is a very difficult movie to watch. It deals with a lot of society problems and it does so through the story of a single individual, Nathaniel Ayers a homeless man suffering from schizophrenia. Nathaniel Ayers is also an extraordinary gifted soloist that is in love with the music and the instruments he plays. Complete and overwhelming dedication and passion that this man possesses will interest a reporter for Los Angeles Times that will tell his story in his newspaper. Soon life will start to turn around for Nathaniel, bu is he ready for that change. Although the movie shows these segments of Nathaniel’s transitions with sort of a cute vibe, schizophrenia is not cute at all, but I guess movie would not be such a success if they did not uses humor. Enjoy….

Director: Joe Wright

Cast: Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr., Catherine Keener, Tom Hollander, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Nelsan Ellis

Mutants [2009]

This French horror movie is usually good. There are a lot of gory moments, and the action is very intense. In a zombie infested France, a paramedic and her husband made their way to an abandoned hospital. They have both been bitten, and now it is only matter of time when they will turn into a flesh hungry zombies. Working the zombie angle, as well the love angle between spouses, director David Morlet creates a very intense mixture. Moral choices that have to be made involve the viewer in the movie even more. Production is very good, and it has that famous French richness of color, this time those colors are usually red or gray. Cast is pretty good, with a more character lead than a pretty girl trying to fight of zombies ( did someone say Resident Evil). Enjoy.

Director: David Morlet

Cast: Hélène de Fougerolles, Francis Renaud, Dida Diafat, Marie-Sohna Conde, Nicolas Briançon

Rating: ★★★★★★★★½☆

Under the Mountain [2009]

Although his previous movie Black Sheep was a beautiful bloody mess, Jonathan King decided to take a different path with this one. Based on a book, Under the Mountain has a more of children’s flick fell to it. The idea and the script are very good, and with a decent budget, this movie, visually really looks great. Evil beings called Wilberforces are tried many decades ago to destroy the Earth with the help of giant monsters called Gargantua. But the Fire Raisers trapped them under the lakes and volcanoes of New Zealand. Somehow The Wilberforces awoke from their slumber and they threaten to turn Earth into an inhospitable place where no human can survive. Earth can save the only remaining Fire Raiser and the twins that have to banish this evil into oblivion. As I said, great effects, great story, but the suspense is missing, still this movie keeps the attention of the viewer, enjoy…

Director: Jonathan King

Cast: Sam Neill, Matt Gillanders, Gareth Reeves, Oliver Driver, Sophie McBride, Madeleine Sami

High Life [2009]

Although this movie is labeled as a comedy, it shows a bit darker side of junkie life and it furthermore instills the belief that drugs are not that great. Dick uses morphine as a drug of choice. He works in a hospital, so that comes in handy with his addiction. But when his trigger-happy buddy from prison Bug visits him everything will start to fall apart. Now they have to come up with a scheme to get some money, and the opportunity presents itself in a form of an ATM machine. Dick gathers two more buddies to pull of this enterprise, but as you are about to see, this job will be very tricky to do. Different and conflicting personalities create a situational humor that is very easygoing and the whole movie looks sort of high. Like its  smoked a bunch of weed and it just tells the story. Stephen Eric McIntyre and Timothy Olyphant really kicked ass in this flick and I am sorry that I have not seen Stephen in more movies, because he is an excellent actor.

Director: Gary Yates

Cast: Timothy Olyphant, Stephen Eric McIntyre, Rossif Sutherland, Joe Anderson, Mike Bell

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆
