Gabriel [2007]

I know that many of you will disagree with the rating of this movie, but I think it is fucking awesome. This is a perfect example of how lack of money pushes director and crew into innovative, original and above all visually stunning solutions. This movie is filled with them, using the noir vibe extensively and mixing it with great and highly involving story it proves that there are still talented people out there. You might compare this flick with the newer version Legion, but you will see that Gabriel still puts up a good fight visually and story-wise. The story is set in a dark city, filled with sin and debauchery. In this purgatory archangels and the fallen ones fight for the human souls. At the time of the Gabriels arrival the darkness has taken entire city. The rest of the archangels are scared and they have gone underground in fear for their lives. It is up to him to try to unite them, and destroy the darkness that have shrouded the city. Of course there are some lame scenes and aspects of the flick (like the overused eyes thing) but they all fade when you look at the big picture. Enjoy.

Opapatika [2007]

Opapatika is a very strange name for a movie and it will stick with you long after you have saw it. It has a decent production values so the special effects and the feel of the movie are good. Director is not afraid to show skulls split open and other gory stuff, making this squirting flick more interesting. You can see the similar approach in Tokio Gore Police, but with a lower budget. The whole story is very original and I liked, its bound to be redone in America. So as you will see in the beginning of the flick, there is another world, a very strange world where beasts, man, and Opapatike live together. Various souls who have died in many ways coexist peacefully, but that is about to change when one mans quest for immortal life jeopardizes the lives of the remaining Opapatike. Opapatike are like superheros, they have individual super powers that they use with a price they have to pay. The only problem with the flick is that the director got lost in the action and fighting sequences, losing the storyline in senseless slaughter. It`s still a good movie :D Enjoy…

Coffy [1973]

When people mention blaxploitation movies, and you do not know what are they about check out this movie and everything will be clear. They are a source of inspiration for many directors like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. These movies are usually set in the drug infested parts of town, and main characters are pushers and pimps that lead a hard life. Coffy is nurse that starts her vigilante mission after her sister dies of the drug overdose. She will mercilessly hunt down pushers, drug lords and pimps in a quest for justice. A lot of nudity, almost funny one liners and just that whole vintage vibe guarantee a great time. Enjoy.

Give ‘em Hell, Malone [2009]

When a movie has a title like this you know what to expect. Pretty similar to Shoot em up, and other em movies, this one incorporates another element to the action and that is that noir vibe that we can feel in it. The first few minutes were just a bloody beautiful mess, that really threw me off track. I was expecting the rest of the movie to be this good and gory, but it took a different path concentrating more on the story and characters. Malone is a classic macho private detective that is trying to get some answers and help his damsel in distress. Combine Sin City, Punisher and a standard fourties detective flick and you got Give ‘em Hell, Malone. Also I was expecting more nudity, but there is not that much of it. Enjoy…

Frankenhooker [1990]

If you are looking for some weird and totally whacked out movie, look no more. This is as twisted as it gets, a medical school dropout that is interested in electronics made a perfect gift, a lawnmower that has a remote. While playing with it his fiancée accidentally gets chopped up by it, leaving only the head intact. He will have to combine his knowledge of medicine and electronics to try to bring his wife to life again. The only problem now is how to get the parts, the perfect parts… And when problems get overwhelming just use a drill to relieve the pressure by drilling the brain a bit. Gore, blood, explosions, and lots of nudity blended with some twisted humor create a strange mixture. The movie does not have that all comical view and vibe to the events, but it rather remains serious on some really funny situations. I know that effects are not so great but the vintage feel and look of the movie are incentive enough to check it out. Enjoy.

Director: Frank Henenlotter
