If you like police movies this movie is for you (the title says is it all). Directed by James Mangold (if you had any doubt that that’s his real surname, just check out his roster after this movie: Girl, Interrupted, IdentityWalk the Line,  3:10 to Yuma, The Wolverine), Cop Land is an all-encompassing cop movie. They managed to cover almost every aspect of previous, similarly themed flicks, and it’s especially interesting that many of the actors that appeared in this movie would make their return in the TV series Sopranos. Complex characters and situations were only magnified by the police factor. It accentuated common human faults and virtues, showing what happens when you have power over life and death. And have to live with that power every day, wondering if this is the day when I lose it. And fucking Michael Rapaport as Murray Babitch, it’s enough to say that two years later Rapaport made a comeback in another extremely popular TV series Friends, playing a cop, of course. And he wasn’t even the star of this flick.

Freddy Heflin (Sylvester Stallone) is a slightly deaf and almost retarded sheriff of a small New Jersey communitycop land that mostly consist of policeman. But a corruption investigation will stir up the muddy waters in this otherwise quiet community shrouded in silence about its activities. I mean, Stallone is playing some quiet and deaf guy, he’s not naked, but actually acting in a role that is perfect for him. Others are there to help him, like Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro. However, Stallone stole the show with his seemingly low-key role. Great story, acting and production values really created a engaging movie that you can immerse yourself in. Enjoy.

Director: James Mangold

Fun Stuff: Sylvester Stallone gained 40 pounds to add realism to his portrayal of the police officer. He also was only paid SAG minimum wages. By the time that reshoots were required, he had lost the weight again.
