The Story

After witnessing his father's murder at the hands of his uncle, a Viking prince flees his homeland, grows into a fearsome warrior, and years later infiltrates his uncle's household disguised as a slave to reclaim his birthright.

The Northman is what happens when a meticulous, obsessive filmmaker gets a real studio budget to indulge his obsessions, and the result is one of the most fully realized historical epics in years. Robert Eggers builds his Viking revenge story out of exhaustingly researched detail — rituals, clothing, dialect, mud — and then stages it with a ferocity that never lets the historical rigor curdle into a museum piece. The film moves like a myth being told around a fire, unhurried but never slack, and its violence lands with a weight that most modern action epics sand away. This is a director working at the peak of his craft.

Alexander Skarsgård gives a physically committed, near-feral performance that carries the film's mythic register without tipping into camp, while Anya Taylor-Joy brings a sly intelligence to a role that could easily have been reduced to a mere love interest. Nicole Kidman gets one of the film's best scenes, a late reveal that recontextualizes everything that came before it and that she plays with real relish. Even the smaller roles — Willem Dafoe's unhinged court jester, Björk's uncanny seeress — are cast and performed with a specificity that keeps the film's mythic sweep grounded in vivid, individual faces.

A Viking revenge myth told with the ferocity and patience of a story worth believing.

This is a film for anyone who wants their revenge epic delivered with total conviction rather than winking self-awareness — closer to a folk tale rendered in blood and mud than a conventional action blockbuster. It's slower and stranger than its marketing suggested, and some audiences expecting a straightforward action movie were thrown by its patience. If you're willing to meet it on those terms, The Northman is a genuinely singular piece of filmmaking, and one of the most rewarding big-budget swings of its year.

The Northman draws its story from the legend of Amleth, recorded by the medieval Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus — the same source material that later inspired Shakespeare's Hamlet. Robert Eggers, known for The Witch and The Lighthouse, co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón and shot the film across Northern Ireland, Iceland, and the Republic of Ireland between August and December 2020. Alexander Skarsgård, who had long sought to make a Viking film, developed the project with Eggers after the two met in 2017. The cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and musician Björk in a rare screen role.

Made on a budget of roughly $70 million, The Northman received widespread critical acclaim, holding around 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 82 on Metacritic, with particular praise for its historical authenticity and Skarsgård's central performance. It underperformed relative to expectations at the theatrical box office, grossing between roughly $69.6 and $75.8 million worldwide against its budget, a result attributed in part to its uncompromising tone and runtime. It found a stronger afterlife on home video and streaming, where it has been reassessed by many critics and viewers as one of the more ambitious studio epics of its release year.
