The Story

In 1881 rural France, a landowner's brutal massacre of a Romani clan brings back a silver-forged curse, and a traveling pathologist must uncover its origin before it consumes the village.

This is gothic horror made by someone who clearly loves the genre's texture as much as its scares, and that love shows in nearly every frame. Sean Ellis shoots the nineteenth-century French countryside like it's rotting from the inside out, all mud, cold silver light, and creeping dread, and he lets that atmosphere do as much work as any single jump scare across the entire runtime. If you've grown tired of horror that rushes headlong to its next gore beat without earning it, the patience on display here feels like a genuine relief rather than a slog.

Boyd Holbrook's haunted traveling pathologist gives the film an emotional anchor amid all the folklore and dread, and the werewolf mythology gets a genuinely unfamiliar spin rather than a rehash of the usual full-moon rules audiences already know by heart. Kelly Reilly's grieving landowner's wife adds another layer of moral weight to a story that keeps circling back to the massacre at its root. The practical creature effects are a real highlight, nasty in a way that feels earned rather than gratuitous, and the period detail never once feels like a costume-drama afterthought bolted awkwardly onto a monster movie for prestige points.

A werewolf movie that actually remembers folklore is supposed to be unsettling, not just bloody.

It runs a little long for what is, underneath all the atmosphere, a fairly simple curse story at its core, and it won't convert anyone who wants their horror lean, fast, and disposable. But for viewers who want a handsomely made, slow-building creature feature with real ideas about guilt, superstition, and colonial violence lurking underneath the fur and fangs, this is well worth carving out the time for on a dark, quiet night when you can let the dread build at its own unhurried pace rather than rushing toward the next scare.

The Cursed had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2021 under its original title, Eight for Silver, before LD Entertainment retitled it for a wider theatrical release in February 2022. Sean Ellis wrote, directed, and shot the film himself, a rare triple credit that let him control its distinctive, desaturated visual style from the ground up rather than handing that vision off to a separate cinematographer. The cast is led by Boyd Holbrook and Kelly Reilly, with strong supporting turns from Alistair Petrie and Roxane Duran rounding out the ensemble of villagers and landowners caught up in the unfolding curse.

Critical response settled into the respectable-but-not-rapturous range: a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 62 on Metacritic, with critics broadly praising its atmosphere and practical effects while noting the pacing dragged somewhat across its longer-than-average runtime. The film picked up nominations at genre-focused festivals including Sitges, in the Best Motion Picture, Director, and Screenplay categories, and at Camerimage for its striking cinematography, reflecting the strong critical regard for its visual craft even in places where the broader mainstream consensus stayed more mixed than enthusiastic. That combination of festival recognition and middling mainstream scores is fairly typical for handsomely mounted genre pictures that prioritize mood over pure scares.
