The Story

Six teams of strangers are handed a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win two million dollars locked in a train station locker, on one condition: whoever gets there first from Las Vegas keeps it all.

Rat Race is proof that a good chase-comedy structure can survive almost any amount of chaos thrown at it. Director Jerry Zucker, who co-made Airplane! and The Naked Gun, borrows the strangers-race-for-buried-money premise from It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and updates it with a starrier, weirder ensemble and a steady stream of increasingly absurd set pieces. The film doesn't slow down long enough to let any single gag overstay its welcome, cutting between storylines fast enough that even the misses get buried under the next attempt at a laugh.

The cast is the real draw here: Rowan Atkinson gets to be gloriously unhinged in ways his more restrained roles rarely allow, John Cleese plays it dry as the man running the whole scheme, and Whoopi Goldberg, Cuba Gooding Jr., and the rest of the ensemble each get at least one memorable set piece to run with. It's the kind of movie that throws a squirrel-related hot air balloon disaster and a stolen Lucille Ball tour bus into the same runtime without ever asking you to take any of it seriously, and it mostly works because the cast commits completely.

Six teams, one suitcase of cash, and absolutely no interest in slowing down to explain itself.

This is a good pick for a group watch or a rainy afternoon when you want something loud, silly, and low-stakes, especially if you have any affection for the era's ensemble comedies. It's not a tightly plotted film, and a few of the sketches land better than others, so don't go in expecting consistency. But it has more genuine laughs per hour than its mixed critical reputation suggests, and its cast of comedy heavyweights swinging for broad physical gags rather than irony has aged into something oddly charming. It's silly on purpose, and it knows exactly who it's for.

Rat Race was written by Andy Breckman and directed by Jerry Zucker, best known for his earlier work on Airplane! and The Naked Gun, and it consciously updates the ensemble-chase formula of the 1963 comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World for a new cast and era. Production filmed across Canada, using Calgary and Drumheller to stand in for various American Southwest routes, alongside real shooting in Nevada, with the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas serving as a key location. John Cleese, known for being selective about his projects, has said the script was one of only a couple in his career that made him want to sign on immediately.

The film received a mixed critical response, landing around 44% on Rotten Tomatoes with reviewers noting its hit-or-miss gag ratio, but it earned a solid B+ CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences, a sign of stronger word-of-mouth than the reviews suggested. It performed well commercially, grossing well above its production budget worldwide, cementing it as one of the more successful ensemble comedies of its release year. In the years since, Rat Race has developed something of a cable-rerun cult following, particularly for its ensemble of comedy veterans and its increasingly ridiculous set pieces, and it's often cited as an underrated entry in the early-2000s wave of large-cast studio comedies.
