Rat Race [2001]

If you’re looking for one of those brainless and mildly entertaining comedies, Rat Race is a perfect choice. Its simple and yet incredibly effective premise along with diverse characters played by an excellent cast guarantee you will have a great time. With a budget of a whopping $48 million, the crew could go wild with the sets, action scenes, and everything else. So, this means that you will enjoy that crystal clear cinematography and excellent sound effects. And some pretty over-the-top stunts.

In a decade when raunchy comedies were taking the world by storm, Rat Race offered a dose of much-needed classic humor. This doesn’t mean there won’t be some pretty outrageous scenes because there will be. I mean, the movie opens with a scene where a man is trying to explain that he didn’t rent a movie titled Afro Whores. It just means there won’t be any explicit violence or nudity.

As you might have figured out from the title, Rat Race is a road comedy. It follows a bunch of crazy characters trying to reach a certain destination in order to win a prize. And while Jon Lovitz and his family trip was arguably the funniest part of the movie, I also liked Cuba Gooding Jr.’s and Breckin Meyer’s troubles. Fucking Barbie museum, that shit will be forever funny.

Welcome to Las Vegas, the city of lights, smiles, and memories. In this vibrant city, we find eccentric millionaire Donald Sinclair who just invented a new game for his rich buddies. Six players have unlimited time to reach Silver City, New Mexico, where $2 million is waiting for them. Who gets there first wins the prize and losers will get nothing. So, let the games begin.

All of the actors brought something unique to Rat Race making it even more funny. This is also one of those movies that are incredibly easy to watch. You just hit play and relax. Some of the action is silly and almost cartoonish but it fits the atmosphere perfectly. There will be cars, helicopters, bikes, and freaking balloon chases here! And I’m keeping a few other modes of transport a secret just for fun. What more to want from a zany comedy?

Finally, if you’re looking for movies like Rat Race I recommend you check out Mr. Bean’s Holiday, RoadTrip, EuroTrip, Sex Drive, and a timeless classic Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.
