Do you know what’s a donkey punch? I have to admit that despite my relatively vast knowledge of sexual terminology I had no clue. And don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you if you want to watch this movie and find out. Donkey Punch is a thriller with an interesting story, realistic atmosphere and good acting. Granted, right from the start you can kind of guess where the whole thing is going only leaving the question of how are we going to get there in the air.
I think that this doesn’t make the movie boring or anything like that. Mostly because of the competent acting and realistic dialogue that sort of pulls you in. Having seen a lot of Brits partying on the Mediterranean, I have to say it was oddly satisfying watching the other part of their night unfolding. In the Rabbit Reviews About section, I talk about how I first watched Dazed & Confused, dreaming of taking part in such a night. I didn’t have the same feeling about this movie, but it was relatively close.
Lisa, Kim, and Tammi are three best friends looking to get away from dreary Britain and have some fun in sunny Spain. While partying they meet four good-looking guys who soon invite them to continue the good times aboard a luxury yacht. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol is replaced by taking copious amounts of drugs and when this happens you know that sex is not far away. What could possibly go wrong now…
The best thing about Donkey Punch is that it’s just so damn entertaining. Especially when you consider that it’s a low-budget movie with relatively unknown actors. Tom Burke was phenomenal as Bluey and we also have the opportunity to see young Jaime Winstone, Ray Winstone’s daughter. This was also Olly Blackburn’s directorial debut and we can expect great things from this strapping young lad.
The excellent first part of the movie might have set up expectations for the second part a bit too high, but that’s just a minor complaint. And actually a compliment to everyone involved. When I started watching, pretty much knowing that it will be the movie of two halves, I almost wanted it to be all drug-fueled debauchery on the yacht. Especially since towards the end you start to feel that we’re just going through the motions of tying up loose ends.
From graphic violence to full-frontal nudity, Donkey Punch has everything you would want from a movie like this. After, it’s about a bunch of young, high and horny couples on a yacht. And Josh, yeah, that’s too bad Joshy boy, seven is an odd number after all. So, if you’re up for some thrills and kills, this movie will be a fine viewing. If you’re looking for similar movies, you can always check out Dead Calm, A Perfect Getaway or Triangle if you’re up for a bit more complex storytelling. And I also have to recommend Very Bad Things, mostly because it’s always a good time to watch it again. Enjoy.
