Wolfman – New werewolf movie starring Ryan Gosling in the works

It’s been more than ten years since we had the pleasure of watching The Wolfman starring Benicio del Toro, the last Universal werewolf movie. I’m not going to bore you with the history of the franchise as you either already know it or you don’t really care about it. With that being said, there’s not much known about Wolfman (with the The), new werewolf movie starring Ryan Gosling. What we know so far is that the director is Derek Cianfrance. He already worked with Gosling on The Place Beyond The Pines, a gritty neo-noir thriller. And I expect that this new movie is going to be about the same.

A modern retelling of a classic story of a man trying to come to grips with the werewolf curse. I’m hoping that we will get something similar to the first story in the above-mentioned movie. A moody and atmospheric character study featuring juicy action sequences. Still, there’s a possibility that this is going to be a period movie. That’s a much easier option and I’m hoping they’re not going to choose it. One of the main reasons why I wanted to talk about Wolfman so early is the because of this dilemma. How do you translate this story of a man turning into a werewolf into a modern environment?

A modern environment where everyone knows what a werewolf is and how it looks like. In a world covered by cameras, cellphones and the fucking Internet. Now that’s a real challenge I’m hoping Cianfrance is going take head on. Of course, he could always go for the small-town environment. Or even decrepit outskirts of a major city, now in shambles. For example, if a werewolf appeared in Philadelphia’s Kensington Avenue, I’m not sure he would be that much out of place. And all the people who would see him, would probably think nothing of him.

This also opens up the possibility of Wolfman being not just a horror movie but a black comedy as well. A man, pardon me, a werewolf can dream… All of this is echoed in the short interview Gosling gave to Collider:

I just would do anything with Derek, but the idea of doing something like that just seems really exciting. It’s new for both of us, but in some way, I feel like it’s kind of the movie we’ve made already a few times, but in literal form. We’ve always kind of made the metaphorical version of it, and it’s sort of like the opportunity to really, to just make the literal version of what we’ve been hacking away at.

Ryan Gosling on the new Wolfman movie

As always, I will update this page with new information as it comes out. When it comes to the release date for Wolfman, I wager it’s going to be some time in late 2024 or mid 2025. Gosling is a busy actor and this is a huge project, so I don’t think that it will be ready any time soon. In the meantime you can check out our selection of Werewolf Movies.
