Ninja Assassin [2009]

I was afraid that this would be another Disney blunder, with some peaceful Ninja warriors that are supposed to teach kids about honor and doing your choirs. Oh boy, how I was wrong. This beautiful blood-fest, this blood-squirting, limb-cutting movie is really awesome. It reminds me of the Machete(without the cocky attitude). Good looking women, very flexible Ninja warriors, and a lot of action are the key ingredients of this movie. The story is in the background and I did not try to follow its shallow path, when you see the word Ninja in the title, it says something(much like when you see: starring Steven Seagal). This movie will make you clean dust of your stored shurikens and Katana swords, and once more wreck the house. Enjoy…

Director: James McTeigue

Cast: Sung Kang, Randall Duk Kim, Yuki Iwamoto, Naomie Harris, Rain, Stephen Marcus

El secreto de sus ojos [2009]

I think this is one of the few Argentinian movies that I have seen, and this is definitely the best. Although it uses the same premise as any other detective/killer movie, this one has a soul of its own, and that special vibe that you cannot find in American movies. The sets, clothes and everything else was top notch just like in some big budget holywood flick, acting was pretty good, maybe at times a bit stiff, but that just represents different mentality of the people. After his retirement Benjamín Esposito decided to write a book about the case that has been with him for 25 years. A murder and rape of a beautiful young women. Director decided to mix the current events with his memories of the case, and that proved to be the right choice. I especially liked the assistant of Esposito, Pablo Sandoval an alcoholic with a great sense of humor.Through the movie, Esposito also ponders about his life and the women that he worked with and had a crush on. This movie is truly refreshing take on a same subject that we see in mainstream cinema, so check it out. Enjoy.

Director: Juan José Campanella

Cast: Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago, Javier Godino, Guillermo Francella, Carla Quevedo

Layer Cake [2004]

I think that English crime flicks developed a cult following, especially after the work of Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch., RocknRolla), although the whole thing has much deeper roots(The Long Good Friday 1980). Layer Cake is also a English crime flick, and if you have seen at least one of these movies you know what to expect. An unknown cocaine dealer is very successful at his work. He is very careful about everything, planning  each and every action. But he will soon find himself knee deep in crap as everything starts to go to hell. Crazy Serbian assassins, drug deals gone wrong, colorful characters and much more created a very good blend of action and intense situations. Daniel Craig was a perfect pick for the role of an unknown dealer(we never learn his name) and the rest of the cast was good too. Enjoy…

Director: Matthew Vaughn

Cast: Daniel Craig, Tom Hardy, Colm Meaney, Tamer Hassan, George Harris, Brinley Green

The Soloist [2009]

The Soloist is a very difficult movie to watch. It deals with a lot of society problems and it does so through the story of a single individual, Nathaniel Ayers a homeless man suffering from schizophrenia. Nathaniel Ayers is also an extraordinary gifted soloist that is in love with the music and the instruments he plays. Complete and overwhelming dedication and passion that this man possesses will interest a reporter for Los Angeles Times that will tell his story in his newspaper. Soon life will start to turn around for Nathaniel, bu is he ready for that change. Although the movie shows these segments of Nathaniel’s transitions with sort of a cute vibe, schizophrenia is not cute at all, but I guess movie would not be such a success if they did not uses humor. Enjoy….

Director: Joe Wright

Mutants [2009]

This French horror movie is usually good. There are a lot of gory moments, and the action is very intense. In a zombie infested France, a paramedic and her husband made their way to an abandoned hospital. They have both been bitten, and now it is only matter of time when they will turn into a flesh hungry zombies. Working the zombie angle, as well the love angle between spouses, director David Morlet creates a very intense mixture. Moral choices that have to be made involve the viewer in the movie even more. Production is very good, and it has that famous French richness of color, this time those colors are usually red or gray. Cast is pretty good, with a more character lead than a pretty girl trying to fight of zombies ( did someone say Resident Evil). Enjoy.

Director: David Morlet

Cast: Hélène de Fougerolles, Francis Renaud, Dida Diafat, Marie-Sohna Conde, Nicolas Briançon
