Loosely based on the original Mother’s Day (this was a Troma flick which makes the quality of the remake almost incomprehensible) from 1980, this updated version took the premise to a much higher level and created a very intense and suspenseful movie. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III, IV) and set in a closed environment, it creates that claustrophobic vibe enhanced by excellent performances by almost the entire cast. But, Rebecca De Mornay stole the show with her creepy and frightening character. Without much hesitation this movie almost immediately plunges into a full swing, and remains in this limbo ’till the end. There are several issues examined in this movie, where the first and the most obvious one is the dysfunctional family (and the Mother), second one is a group of normal people, friends even, under extreme circumstances and their behavior. The characters are the thing that makes this an almost perfect movie.

Sohapis are a normal married couple (well apart from a weird surname), and they are having a party with close friends in their house, not knowing that they are about to receive some unexpected guests. When three criminals on a run from law crash in their house, they will be subjected to something that they could not imagine not even in their nightmares (and just to be clear this is not some torture fest movie, banking on gruesome scenes to score). Crazy, sadistic and quite violent three brothers will soon quiet down with the arrival of the mastermind of the gang, their mother. And if you imagined her as some disturbed and insane person, think again…

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman

Cast: Rebecca De Mornay, Jaime King, Shawn Ashmore, Briana Evigan, Frank Grillo

Fun Facts: During the filming of a scene that involved guns, the actors were pulled over and held at gun point by the police after mistaking them for people that actually robbed a bank not too far from where they were filming. After realizing that it was all a big misunderstanding, the police and the film team all had a good laugh about it.
